The Spice Pups Family Reunion - Huge Success!

Haley and Wolfie (being shy)
The Spice Pups Family Reunion held on October 13, 2013, at the Barrel Oak Winery was a huge success - despite the rain.  Four pups and their families attended along with both of the foster families!

Vixen (a friend of Antonia)
The dogs were shy around each other at first, but it didn't take long before some of them were playing like they saw each other yesterday!

I know I enjoyed seeing the pups and meeting the families and fosters.  It's nice to have new friends that have common bonds - our beautiful, fun puppies.

Let's do it again next year!

Count Down to The Spice Pups Family Reunion

The hint of Fall is in the air!  The Spice Pups Family Reunion is right around the corner.  We are hoping that all of The Spice Pups families will make time in their busy schedules to join us.

As a reminder, The Spice Pups Family Reunion is being held on Sunday October 13, 2013, at the Barrel Oak Winery from 2 - 5 p.m.  Hopefully everyone will be within an hour's drive or less.

This is a great opportunity for all of the owners and all the pups, including mom, Jupiter, to get together - not for the last time, but hopefully for what will become an annual event.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.  Please let me know if you are planning on attending so we can be sure to recognize you!

Meet Curry!

Meet Curry - one of the spice pup girls.  If not for her, I would not have ever found the spice pups and Wolfie would not be a part of my family!  So a big round of applause for this pretty girl.  I'm told she's shy at first, not real confident around other dogs, but loves people and once she warms up, loves to play.

If you are a  Spice Pup send us your photos, we'll get them posted!  Looking forward to the Spice Pup Family Reunion on Sunday October 13, 2013!  Mark your calendar and join us!

Wolfie discovers his tail!

Here's a short video of Wolfie as he finally figures out why he has such a long tail.  It's a new friend.  And, one that can't get away!

It's time for a family reunion.  The Spice Pups are planning a family get together scheduled for Sunday October 13, 2013 from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Barrel Oak Winery conveniently located off Rt. 66 in Virginia.  Hopefully the whole family and some of their friends (human and canine) will be able to attend.

The winery is very dog friendly and we should be able to have a great time, sip some wine, share some family stories and enjoy the Spice Pups!  Hope to see you there.
Please come!

My New Life - Wolfie

One day you are happy playing with all your siblings and then the next everything changes.  In my case, I packed up and moved to Florida!  Even got to go on a jet plane - you remember me at the airport right?
Well little did I know what life had in store for me.  We got home late on a Sunday night and then bright and early Monday morning, I had to go to work with my mom.  Well, let me tell you, now I have to go every single day.  I like it for a while - lots of people are there, they all think I'm cute, I get to take a nap or two, I go on walks, eat my lunch, hang out, etc.  But it's the same thing every day.  Luckily, my dad has been coming to pick me up about 4 o'clock.  And don't think I don't know how to tell time - I do.  I start to get really naughty about that time, hoping he will hurry up and take me home.  Once or twice my mom had to work late and I did not like that.

She brings that little white dog - Leiden - to the office every day too!  She actually likes it.  She never wants to go home with Daddy when he comes.  She hides in the corner hoping he won't see her.  She thinks its her job to take care of our mom.  I was thinking maybe that was supposed to be my job.  Well, the other day, I decided I would take over Leiden's bed - she sure wasn't happy about that.  I just took my bone, curled up in her bed and made her sleep on the floor.  Haha.  Here's Leiden just in case you forgot what she looks like.
When she's naughty she stands on Mom's desk.  She'll only do it when Mom isn't looking though.

Last week I had to go to this place where they spend a lot of time poking around looking at all your pieces parts - your mouth, your ears, your eyes, your you know what.  Then they shoved something down my throat and gave me a shot!  Yuk!  I did get a treat though and they were pretty nice to me so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Here's my daily routine.  Mom makes us get up at 6.  She has a bunch of horses - these giant dog looking things - that she keeps in a building in the back yard.  First we have to go and feed them.  Then the cat, Black Jack gets fed.  Then she makes me wait and wait while she gets a wheel barrow and fills it up with smelly stuff.  After she dumps that and tosses some hay to those big dogs, we finally get to go the house and eat!  I love my breakfast so much - it's gone like in 30 seconds.  I eat so fast my mom makes me eat out of a special bowl that makes me work harder to get all the small pieces.
After breakfast she harnesses up Tobie and Fawn on this special leash for two and then she puts my leash on and then we go for a walk!  I love to walk.  I'm really good on the leash and always stay right at my mom's hip even though those other dogs are walking really fast.  We walk a very long way, turn around and head back home.  Then I finally get to take a little nap while mom gets ready for work.

Then it's off to work and I already told you about that.  After I get home from work, I get to play, eat dinner and go to bed.  As they say, "It's all in a day's work!"  I'm having a great time and everyone has been really nice to me.

I did hear that my mom has been trying to make contact with all the people who have my brothers and sisters.  Hopefully they will write to me and send pictures.  I know mom got a few pictures.  I'll share some with you here.

Wolfie Gets a New Home!

I was so happy and excited to adopt Wolfie!  Everything went exactly as planned!  He is a doll baby and I'm looking forward to a long lifetime of love and shared experiences.  I can't even begin to say how good he has been.

I know he's been through a lot of changes in a short amount of time - that's one of the things I love best about dogs.  They are so adaptable.

We got Wolfie home to sister Julie's home and he had a few new friends to make right away - Bella the Jack Russell/Aussie and Maui, the family cat.  He did well on all accounts - although he did let out a few baby cries if someone looked at him a little too long.  He quickly learned to rely on hiding behind mom's legs or trying to get me to pick him up.  Undoubtedly, he'll grow up to be a brave dog and won't need my help at all.  He really loves his aunt Aubrey and she loves him too!

I was afraid that he would be lonely without his siblings so the first night I let him sleep in bed with me.  He really seemed to take to the idea and made himself immediately comfortable.  He was really good all night.  got up twice to take him out because I was nervous, but he did fine.
On Sunday we went for a long walk down at Riley's Lock along the Potomac River and ran a few errands.  Wolfie was happy to come along.  He was also happy to take a break under a shady tree.
The day ended all too soon and we had to head to the airport.  No issues there either.  He was very well-behaved, adored by many and slept the whole way home on the plane!  He may be a little traveler.

Meet the Spice Pups

The Spice Pups were rescued by Lost Dog Rescue located in Northern Virginia.  The story of how they came to the rescue has to be told by one of its founders or volunteers - I wasn't there.  What I know is that the mother of the Spice Pups, Jupiter and five (5) of her puppies were surrendered.  It is believed that Jupiter spent most of her time tied to the front porch of her former owner's home.  A visiting caller, let's call him Romeo, is the daddy of these fine pups.  He is believed to be descended from the every popular Labrador, while mom is a Husky beauty.
I happened to be in the wrong place at the right time - Petfinder.com seeking out the newest love of my life after having lost my sweet Kira.  I was visiting my property in  Sperryville, Virginia and thought I'd take a quick ride over to Northern Virginia and pick up the puppy of my choice.  Well, as you know, the Universe works in its own special way and the original pup that caught my eye - Curry - was not destined to be my pup after all.
Disappointed but acknowledging that all things happen for a reason, I returned to my home in Florida puppyless.  Yet, I still felt drawn toward this litter from some inexplicable reason.  I inquired about adopting mom, Jupiter, only to learn that she too had found her forever home.  So that was that - or so I thought.  One day, there's an email from Lost Dog Rescue explaining that there were not just five (5) pups, but actually eight (8) and they had just received the latest three pups - did I want one?  Decisions, decisions.
Yes, please. I'll take the puppy in the front with the Shepherd look and the white feet playing with the ball.  These three (3) were named Wolfsbane, Black Pepper and Coriander.  I thought I wanted a girl, but then there was Wolfie and I absolutely could not resist.  Send more pictures please, here's my application, I'm catching the first flight out!
I have a feeling he might have tricked me with that ear up!  I haven't seen that yet - it appears the girls all look more like their mom and the boys are trending toward their dad.  I'll know more when the other families chime in with stories and pictures of their own.

Wolfie is a happy, bright puppy ready to start his new life in Florida with his four (4) new sisters, Leiden, Sassy, Tobie and Fawn.

My biggest dilemma was getting Wolfie from Maryland to Florida.  I got myself to Maryland without a problem, even organized an impromptu high school/neighborhood get together in honor of the opportunity to come to town.  But, would Wolfie still be small enough to fit into an airline approved crate that would fit under the seat of the plane?  I had an approved carrier, no problem.  Foster mom, Haley agreed to send measurements and his weight - still not sure.  Well, we'll just have to wait and see and have a back up plan, just in case.  The back up plane was to rent a car, kidnap my nephew and drive together to Florida.  That way he could return the rental and I wouldn't have to pay a huge drop off fee.  (BTW, renting a car one way from Maryland to Florida isn't cheap!)

Saturday morning at the appointed time and at the appointed Petco on Rockville Pike, my sister Julie, my niece Aubrey Anne, my nephew Keaton and I arrived to meet Wolfie for the first time!  We were very excited.  There was Haley's mom watching over Wolfie who was having a little crowd anxiety and having a few second thoughts about coming out of his travel crate.  Well he finally did and we were not disappointed at all!  He is terribly cute.  Best news of all, he fit into the airline crate - it wouldn't be a roomy king size bed, but he would be able to make the trip!
The other really super duper good new is that sister, Coriander was adopted weekend before last and brother Black Pepper was being adopted at exactly the same time as Wolfie.  The brothers were able to say their goodbyes and the new parents were able to exchange contact information.  We were also able to get a couple of good pictures to share.
A big thanks to Haley, her mom and family for giving these pups such a great foster experience.  Congratulations to the Jewels for adopting Black Pepper.  My hope is that all of the families and their fosters will take an opportunity from time to time to post pictures and stories about the experiences of the Spice Pup so the saga can continue!
